What is TEDxUniversityofMississippi?

We are a group of student volunteers that create an event unlike any other. We share the wonder of Mississippi—it’s innovators, creators, and thinkers. We share ideas from outside Mississippi that can impact Mississippians in a positive way. Ultimately, we share an evening of curated Talks each year that spark conversation in our community and beyond. Our Talks are published on the nationally and internationally browsed TEDx Youtube channel, free of charge. We also provide access to the Talks on this website.

What is TED?

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman. Learn More!

What is TEDx?

x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, live speakers aim to spark deep discussion and connection. Learn More!

In 2015, TEDxUniversityofMississippi hosted its first TEDx event at the Gertrude Ford Center for the Performing Arts. As an R-1 research institute and Mississippi’s flagship university, we believe it is our duty to promote and disseminate the best ideas to the biggest possible audience.

Who Speaks?

Each year, the TEDxUniversityofMississippi team chooses approximately eight speakers from many nominations. Ultimately, speakers are chosen based on the insight they can provide, innovation they have generated, or creativity they have evolved. We seek ideas relevant to Mississippi with the potential to positively impact our community, state, nation, and world. We receive nominations year round. You’ll see a link to the nomination form on our website header. Each nomination we receive is given full attention and all speakers chosen (no matter how accomplished) are unpaid. Our international platform is not for commercial gain but for creating a spotlight on ideas worth spreading.
